I really liked the solid feel and quality of this item. It worked great to open bottles of wine with very little struggle. It is particularly useful when the cork is old or friable, and helps keep it out of the bottle. This was a gift for my husband, but both of us have used it and enjoyed it.

Long have I been plagued with having to push half a broken cork into a fine bottle of wine. No more with this very reliable and effective gadget. It brings back the joy of the bottle opening ritual without the anxiety the cork will crumble due to saving the (already old) bottle of wine for a special occassion. If you have older bottles with potentially brittle corks, don't take the chance. I will purchase others as gifts for my wine enthusiast friends.Just a note of caution: You have to wiggle it back and for as you settle the opener on the cork. If you merely push down, you will push the cork down and potentially break the bottle as noted in other reviews. This cork remover is designed not to be pushed straight down but for you to wiggle it back and forth while applying mild pressure. If you're pushing or the cork appears to be moving into the bottle, you are not doing it correctly.

I was always amazed when I saw corks that were not damaged. Maybe it's me but I'm having hard time opening it without damaging the cork.
