I ordered this as a replacement for the same type of corkscrew that I bought while living in France. While I bought the first one on a lark, since it's a ratchet, it proved to be one of the best corkscrews I've ever used. The advantage of the design is that it pulls evenly on the cork, as opposed to a waiter's friend that pulls at an angle. I've used this type of corkscrew to take out stubborn and even broken corks. One word of warning; however, do be careful using this on a synthetic cork -- I broke the teeth on my old one pulling a plastic cork, which is the only reason I bought a new one. At this price it made a great present for friends.

I really liked the both the looks and the the Ratchet Lever idea. I am sure that the artist who created this piece made a prototype and tested it. And I am sure it worked.The piece I received however did not.I was unable to pull a cork out of the bottle more then half way. I tried it on three different bottles (thinking that perhaps the cork might be too long, or something else is at fault)It appears that the the problem lies with the ratchet: it doesn't catch.My heart goes out to the designer: poor workmanship on faraway shores made this truly good-looking piece worthless.I had to return mine.
