It took me a while to warm to this waiters corkscrew as I am reasonably adept with a classic waiters corkscrew. The foil cutter works very nicely with a turn of the wrist and the teflon coated corkscrew itself very quickly and easily bores into a cork. This Oenophilia corkscrew is both sturdily made and very nicely finished and designed.It differs from a classic corkscrew in that there is a small hook which you need to engage over the bottle lip. You then push down on the handle to open your wine bottle. This process takes a bit of learning and coordination but less so than a classic corkscrew. Overall this is a very nice wine/kitchen gift/gadget which I enjoy using.

Amazingly the Coutale Plus is even worse than the sommelier version I used and reviewed previously. As expected the foilcutter which distinguishes - an inaccurate usage of the verb if ever - the Plus from its sibling struggles with some of the thicker foil caps that too often dress bottles containing wines of some pretension, but that is not the central problem here. Rather, it lies in the too loosely attached worm which tends to buckle as you apply the adequate pressure needed to thread it into the cork. The Coutale foot , I'll say it once more, is brilliant - even if here again it tends to flop out of its casing too easily and gets in the way; it's unfortunate therefore that the rest of the design is so mediocre. I've settled on the Pedrini: it may be ugly but it gets the job done with minimal frustration.
